Copper Wire

What happens if stripped wire is tarnished, tinned or coated?

Short answer: Tarnished, oxidised or coated copper is still copper and can be sold, but it is normally graded below bright wire, and tinned or plated wire may be priced differently because the coating has to be dealt with in processing, so keep these grades separate from bright wire and describe them honestly to the buyer.

Tarnish and oxidation

Dull or darkened copper is lower grade than bright, though the difference is often modest.

Tinned and plated wire

Some wire has a coating that changes how it is processed and priced.

Be honest

Describing the wire accurately avoids a downgrade at the weighbridge.
